This article is about the specific tools you will have to create the magnificent cakes you can charge high prices for.

First, you’ll need an oven. (I understand, it looks like a no-brainer, right?) But you do want to ensure that your oven heats evenly–and doesn’t burn in one corner while undercooking in another. You need to use your regular oven it it fits the bill. You don’t need to upgrade to a best home pizza dough press pricey commercial grade oven until your cake decorating business really takes off.

Next, a high quality, heavy duty stand mixer. I would recommend the KitchenAid 5 Quart Artisan models for their durability and performance. My grandmother bought a second hand one over 20 years ago and used it each day in her cake decorating business.

Spending some money on an excellent quality Turntable is a great investment. As you grow your business and get into more elaborate cakes, you’ll appreciate the versatility. You can look for ones with motors – or ones that you manually turn. Either way is fine.

Baking Pans need to be the next thing on your list. There are many different pans you’ll need–from small round pans (6″ and up) to large rectangular pans–and everything in between. If you are doing this on a commercial basis, usually do not buy registered trademark character pans. They may be fine for home birthday parties, but are an infringement on trademark if you try to sell them. You don’t need the legal hassles.

A few other necessities include:

– Cooling Racks – Large ones for large project

– Separators

– Spatulas (certain types are more useful than others)

– Piping Bags

– Strategies for creating borders, petals, leaves, etc.

– A good quality camera for future marketing of your cake decorating business

I explain each of these in more detail in my own book.

These basic tools are certain to get you started. As your confidence and skills grow, you might find a need for more specialized equipment. But this can get you started!
